Guide To Coasteering South Devon

Discover The Main Coasteering Locations & Providers In South Devon
Complete Guide To Coasteering

South Devon is known for many things, from the Jurassic finds of East Devon to the English Riviera of Torquay to the busy shipping ports of Plymouth. However, in coasteering, you get to experience even more of what the region has to offer. Some of South Devon’s best coasteering locations are easy to get to from cities such as Plymouth and Exeter, and near popular holiday locations such as Torquay. Coasteering South Devon is a fun and exciting day out.

More than the South West Coast Path

The great thing about coasteering south Devon is that you get to see so much more of Devon than you would on a normal walk. The South West Coast Path takes you across the top of some beautiful clifftops and across some of the regions great beaches. However, if you often find yourself wanting to wander off the beaten path, coasteering can be the perfect solution. Combining hiking, climbing, diving, and more, coasteering gets you interacting with the coast in an exhilarating way.

Coasteering South Devon is best done with an experienced guide who can help you get the most out of your adventure. South Devon’s best coasteering providers will offer all you need for a safe, exciting day out. This will generally include a wet suit and safety equipment, but may also include specialist equipment such as kayaks depending on what route you choose. Some South Devon coasteering will start with a boat ride, giving you the chance to swim back to shore before climbing and jumping.

Salcombe: Exploring for the whole family

Salcombe offers a great starting point for coasteering adventures. Located close to Plymouth, the Salcombe Harbour features some of South Devon’s best small beaches, including Mill Bay and Sunny Cove. From there you can look over to the historic Fort Charles. Salcombe is a favourite for first-time coasteers as its waters are relatively calm and there’s plenty of exploring possible at both low and high tide. While there are some climbing spots, it’s also great for younger coasteers, as some trails focus more on wild swimming and walking across rocks than vertical climbs and jumps.

However, the region does offer some more excitement to get your heart thumping. Near Salcombe, Gara Rock beach offers everything you need for South Devon coasteering. There are rock formations to climb, clear water for swimming, and caves to explore. It’s the perfect choice if you love to jump, as it offers 10-metre heights! The coast here is famous for its scenery and is perfect if you want to see the best that nature has to offer. Nearby Start Point is also a favourite of more experienced coasteers and the top choice if you love lots of jumps.

Brixham: Fishing coves to explore

Brixham is best known for fishing, but there’s plenty of coasteering locations nearby. Just along the coast from Brixham Harbour, Fishcombe Cove offers some great areas to explore. From the rocky outcropping of Bradley Beach to the sheltered beach at Churston Cove, this small inlet features clear waters and lots of history. The single beaches are often quiet, and the red cliffs surrounding them are great for climbing. If you’re on the lookout for sea life, this is also one of South Devon’s best spots for seeing seals.

Elberry Cove is a bit further from Brixham, about halfway to Paignton, and joins the South West Coast Path at a particularly scenic point. It offers excellent swimming opportunities and more historic caves to explore.

Torquay: Lyme Bay’s best locations

Further along the coast, and a quick drive from Exeter, you’ll find Torquay’s best coasteering locations. A popular spot for coasteering, Anstey’s Cove offers a great mix of adventures to get your adrenaline pumping. The rocks are perfect for scrambling across and climbing, and it’s an excellent place for wild swimming. There’s plenty to explore along this stretch of South Devon coast, and a great mix of big and small jumps available.

Along the coast, on the other side of Long Quarry Point, is the secluded beach at Babbacombe. This is a firm local favourite and one that includes features that make it perfect for coasteering. The shingle beach opens out to rock formations that are great for climbing. A day of coasteering here can also be combined with a ride on the famous cliff railway at Oddicombe.
